Book Expo America: Day 2

Well, we survived BEA day 2… And it was the first day that the exhibition floor was open, so we got to do a bit of visiting of old friends and colleagues.

But before that, we had more sessions to attend:

First up was Spanish and Latin American Fiction in Translation, which (in true Latino style) began late. But it was an interesting dialogue between Spanish author Javier Sierra, publisher of translated fiction Chad W. Post, and translator/publishing director Valerie Miles. Topics included how a translator’s own prose affects the original author’s message, why translated books are less popular in the US than in Europe, and the positive effect a Spanish-language co-edition will have on an English-language book.

Next up, a session on Advanced Facebook by Cindy Ratzlaff. I was very impressed with Cindy’s talk on Day one and her presentation today did not disappoint. Cindy offered a rapid-fire barrage of incredible tips, tricks, ideas and examples of how to make your facebook fan page a success. And this session was very well attended… not an empty chair in sight!

Now something I did NOT do in the Javits Center was check email. Why, you ask? Because the Javits Centre does not offer free wifi. And you really had to feel for the session presenters and digital vendors who wanted to show something online and couldn’t. (Well, they could. But at $5 per hour.)
