Book Expo America: Day 2

Well, we survived BEA day 2… And it was the first day that the exhibition floor was open, so we got to do a bit of visiting of old friends and colleagues.

But before that, we had more sessions to attend:

Book Expo America: Day 1

So here we are in NYC! It’s been a crazy week of travel to get here… we were on the first ever Qantas Sydney to Dallas flight, which commenced with Texan-style fanfare in Sydney and end with a huge media circus as we got off the plane in Dallas. To our surprise, Qantas Ambassador John Travolta was there to greet every passenger as we got off the plane. There’s really nothing like walking past a ton of cameras and reporters after being on a 15+ hour flight…

Bisummeral

Bisummeral defines someone who travels from one hemisphere to the other, in order to attain year-round summer weather according to Urban Dictionary.

Why are we telling you this? Because Tango Media is going bisummeral for 2011. We’ve enjoyed the Australian summer immensely, and now that it’s cooling down here in Sydney we’re heading to New York for a few months. So yes, we are getting two summers and zero winters this year… and we are pretty thrilled about that!

Why are we doing this? It may sound a bit obnoxious, but the answer is because we can and we really REALLY want to! While we are in New York, we’ll be attending Book Expo America to learn all the latest industry trends in print and digital book publishing. Beyond that, we’ll continue to work for all of our clients in Australia, the UK and the USA. A note to the Australians: we’ll be setting up specific ‘online’ hours where our work day will overlap with yours and we can easily be reached. So not to worry, we look after our clients regardless of where we are. We’re nice that way.

Want to know more? Please get in touch and we’ll tell you all about it…

A Thought About Digital Media

Fresh from attending the 2010 Mediabistro eBook Summit in New York City, I’m asking myself, what’s the takeaway?  I’m wondering if digital media is for me and if I can make good, positive, active use of it as a writer.  The summit was certainly informative.  Keynote speaker Douglas Rushkoff was particularly lively and insightful.  (I highly recommend his latest book Program or be Programmed: Ten Commandments for a Digital Age.)  I listened to panelists in love with technology, others who are leery of it (though still use it judiciously); people who believe that there’s room for everyone’s writing, others who insist that some of us should put our pens down; those who think there’s money to be made as writers and those who say don’t quit your day job.

Who should I listen to?  The answer is everyone.  Everyone’s experience with writing and publishing is different, and everyone’s experience is valid.  So, my takeaway on how to negotiate the new world of digital media is transition and adaptability.  I, like the rest of us, need to figure out where I fit into the equation so that I can use technology in a way that allows me to stay true to myself while finding new means to communicate with those who might be interested in what I have to say.  Many of the speakers and panelists today said the same thing.  They didn’t get into publishing to get rich, they got into it because they love it.  How much more affirmation do I need than that?
